Professional Background
Paul McDonnell is Chair of the firm's Fire Litigation Group and Insurance Group. His area of practice is insurance defence litigation with a specific emphasis on fire litigation.
Mr. McDonnell's clients include property and casualty insurers and professional liability insurers. He has extensive experience in fire related litigation in major property losses, products liability, forestry, construction law, municipal liability and commercial host liability in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. He also provides advice and opinions on coverage and policy wordings pertaining to general liability, property, construction and professional liability matters. Mr. McDonnell has extensive trial and appellate court experience, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mr. McDonnell is a Past President of the International Association of Arson Investigators British Columbia Chapter. He is editor of the Chapter's newsletter and a member of the Chapter's Education Committee. He has been a Director of the Chapter since 1995.
Mr. McDonnell has been a guest lecturer and has provided articles for the International Association of Arson Investigators, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the Fire Prevention Officers Association of British Columbia, the Justice Institute, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the British Columbia Institute of Technology, the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, Canadian Defence Lawyers, the Canadian Association of Fire Protection Engineers, and the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators. He has also conducted in-house presentations and lectured at numerous insurance industry fire loss and insurance law seminars.
