Lawyers in the Ranks

Congratulations to Barbara Cornish, who was recently appointed to the Board of Governors with the International Academy of Mediators. IAM is an invitation- only organization of preeminent mediators of commercial disputes from around the world.

A tip of the hat also goes to Jeffrey Hand, who was recently inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators at a conference held in Queenstown, New Zealand. Jeffrey joins Barbara as one of only two IAM mediators in Western Canada.

SU News Beyond the Office

Barbara Cornish will be chairing the International Academy of Mediators Fall Conference, which is being held in Vancouver September 22–24. The academy fosters the highest standards of integrity and competence in the mediation of commercial disputes. The theme of this year’s conference is “Perspective is Everything”.

A number of SU lawyers have busy schedules  these  days. Derek Brindle is co-chairing an inaugural program for The Canadian Institute on “Experts—The Law and Best Practices” in June. In September, Derek will present a paper on comparative damages in São Paulo, Brazil, at the Sixth Society of Construction Law International Biennial Conference, where Helmut Johnannsen is also doing two presentations, one on problems with EPC and design-build construction, and one on project delivery systems. As well, Helmut will be chairing and speaking at the International Bar Association Annual Conference in Washington, DC in September. In May, both Helmut and John Singleton spoke at the BCAMI Symposium on International Commercial Dispute Resolution and, in June, they made presentations at the Pacific Business and Law Institute’s program on major projects in the construction industry.

At the Canadian Defence Lawyers’ Annual Paralegal Program at the Terminal City Club in May, Dan Barber made a presentation on “The Clash: Using Summary Trial to Bring About Early Resolution”.

The SU team “Better of Sled” of  Nick Cosulich, Dan Barber, Brendan Ward and Darren Stewart competed admirably in this year’s  B.C. Law Firm Ski Championships held on Blackcomb Mountain in March.
